A Wide Game is a type of game played in a large area such as bushland or large parks. Many of of the games are best suited to areas of open bush that provide cover for hiding but which can be moved through realitively easily. The Games are commonly played by Scouts and other large sociable groups of young people. The games can have many possible objectives, including capture-the-flag, capture-the-enemy, or be a variant of British Bulldog. The games can also be a variation of another game (such as football, rugby, ultimate Frisbee). They can be played at night or during the daylight hours. Just choose the appropriate game.
The references below provide a range of wide games that can be played.
The open park land adjacent to 1st/10th Scout Hall makes an ideal location to take your group to play many of the wide games. Most of the Scout Halls in Moonee Valley District have suitable parkland near by. Woodlands Historic Park near Tullamarine Airport is also an excellent venue for older participants (scouts/venturers).
SAFETY:
Appropriate First Aid - you can expect scratches, cuts and grazes from the bush. Strained ankles are a possibility at night. Boundaries such as fences or roads are important to reduce the chances of people becoming lost. A whistle should be provided in case this happens but be aware that a whistle can only be heard from a relitively close distance. Suitable clothing , particularly footware must be worn. Long sleeved shirts and long pants will reduce scratches. Don't forget a good first aid kit.
